Thanks to extremely sensitive ultrasound technology, thyroid nodules are being detected and treated at unprecedented rates. Host Dr. Beverly Hashimoto welcomes Dr. John Cronan, professor of diagnostic imaging at the Brown University School of Medicine and chairman of the diagnostic imaging department at Rhode Island Hospital, to discuss the phenomenon of over-treatment of thyroid nodules. Dr. Beverly Hashimoto practices as a radiologist at Virginia Mason Medical Center in Seattle, and specializes in mammography. She is also a clinical assistant professor at the University of Washington Medical School and the Seattle University School of Science and Engineering. Dr. Hashimoto received her medical degree from Stanford University School of Medicine, and completed a fellowship in MRI and Ultrasound at the University of California, San Francisco Medical Center. She is a past president of the Pacific Northwest Radiological Society and its current Washington councilor. Dr. Hashimoto is the author of the books, Breast Imaging: A Correlative Atlas and Practical Digital Mammography. She is also a fellow of the American College of Radiology, the American Institute of Ultrasound Medicine, and the Society of Radiologists in Ultrasound.
Dr. John J. Cronan is professor of diagnostic imaging at the Brown University School of Medicine, and is chief of radiology and chairman of the Department of Diagnostic Imaging at the Rhode Island Hospital in Providence. With over 100 publications to his name, Dr. Cronan is a nationally-recognized expert in the fields of uroradiology; ultrasound; and non-vascular interventional procedures, particularly image-guided percutaneous needle biopsies.Dr. Cronan received his medical degree from Albany Medical College, completed his residency in diagnostic radiology at Yale University and a fellowship in abdominal imaging at Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston.
