Program Description
Successful cochlear implantation has remarkable impact on quality of life for children with congenital and early onset hearing loss. How do clinicians best evaluate these children for likelihood of success with implants, and what are the imaging challenges when following up with these patients later on? Drs. Scott Holland and Daniel Choo from the University of Cincinnati examine new technologies on the horizon, from fMRI to near-infrared spectrophotometry, for screening and following candidates of cochlear implantation. In the process, they outline salient features of sensorineural hearing deficits and share the state-of-the-art in operative methods for implantation. Dr. Jason Birnholz hosts.

Dr. Jason Birnholz is considered one of the founders of diagnostic ultrasound imaging. He began scanning as a clinical fellow at the National Institutes of Health in Bethesda, Maryland, initially as a means of identifying coronary artery disease, and later for finding and staging various types of tumors. Following completion of residency training in diagnostic radiology at Massachusetts General Hospital, Dr. Birnholz did graduate study in acoustics and mathematics at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. He subsequently held academic and clinical appointments at Stanford University, Harvard Medical School, and Rush Medical College, lecturing internationally on topics spanning instrumentation, examination technique, and a full range of specific clinical applications.
Dr. Scott K. Holland is the McLaurin Scholar in pediatric neurosurgery and professor of radiology, pediatrics, biomedical engineering, neuroscience and physics at University of Cincinnati, and director of the Pediatric Brain Imaging Research Center at Children's Hospital Research Foundation. A physicist by training, he received his BS in physics from Muhlenberg College in Allentown, Pennsylvania, in 1980, and his MS in 1982 and PhD in 1985 in applied physics, from Yale University.
Dr. Daniel I. Choo is associate professor of otolaryngology at the University of Cincinnati College of Medicine, and Director of Otology/Neurotology at Cincinnati Children's Hospital Medical Center. Dr. Choo obtained his medical degree from the State University of New York Health Science Center at Syracuse, and completed his otolaryngology residency training in Syracuse. Dr. Choo completed fellowships in otology/neurotology at the Ear Research Foundation in Sarasota, Florida, and the neurotology branch of the National Institute on Deafness and Other Communication Disorders (NIDCD), National Institutes of Health, Bethesda, Maryland.
